Winter Detailing

Why should I detail my vehicle before winter?

  • Salt Truck salting road in Sioux Falls, SD

    Salt

During the winter, salt is used on the roads to increase road safety when snow and ice are expected. The salt used can harm your vehicle’s paint and undercarriage if the car is not adequately prepared and maintained during winter. The rust forms because the snow and ice mix with the road salt, oxidizing the paint. Leaving your vehicle untreated can lead to rust spots forming on the surface and underbody of your car. Proper paint preparation and maintenance are recommended if you face harsh winter conditions.

  • Road De-icer spraying the ground

    De-Icer

In most places another commonly used chemical to prevent accidents in the winter is de-icer. This is another concentrated chemical used to unthaw the ice. When the ice and snow melt, the puddles and deicer mix and stick to your car’s paint when you drive through a puddle or area containing large amounts of deicer and salt. If not properly maintained it is likely the mixture will eat away at the paint causing corrosion.

  • Other road contaminants

In the winter, everything thrown out onto the road is all combined with the snow and ice, resulting in some potentially harmful chemicals and other grime sticking to the surface of your car. A big one that is commonly found in car oil. Driving through a puddle mixed with oil, salt, and de-icer without proper maintenance will surely leave a surprise if not taken care of in a relative time frame.

Are there any solutions to prevent rust and damage during the winter?

The best way to protect your vehicle is by waxing or ceramic coating the car.

Wax is a durable and relatively inexpensive solution that creates a boundary on top of the car’s paint to help prevent grime and road containment from sticking and oxidizing from the salt. The downside to traditional wax is the duration the wax will last before needing to be correctly applied again. The time frame can range between a few days to a few months.

A ceramic coating is our recommended way to protect your vehicle throughout all four seasons, including winter. Similar to wax with a few more unique components. When a ceramic coating is applied, the idea is to properly bond the coating to your vehicle’s paint, creating a very durable and long-lasting layer of protection. This is a more robust shield than traditional wax and can last twice as long if properly maintained. Salts and grime cannot bond and embed themselves into your clear coat as easily. A ceramic coating also presents an always slick and shiny finish after every wash. Ceramic Coatings for more information on the protection a layer can offer.
